Higher Numbers For Spain’s Zapatero

January 28, 2005

(Angus Reid - CPOD Global Scan) - José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero is regaining public support in Spain, according to a poll by Instituto Opina released by Cadena Ser. 60.2 per cent of respondents approve of the president's performance, a 2.6 per cent increase since November.

Zapatero of the Socialist Worker's Party (PSOE) was sworn in as president of the government in April 2004, following his party's victory in the Mar. 14 general election.

In July, the Spanish government passed a preliminary resolution to explore a possible legalization of same-sex marriage. Other government proposals include relaxing the country's abortion regulations, and permitting euthanasia.

On Jan. 25, Pope John Paul II criticized the policies at a meeting with Spanish priests in Rome. The head of the Catholic Church said the resolutions promote "a mentality inspired in secularism that fosters the abhorrence of religion."

On Jan. 26, Zapatero said he "deeply respected" the Pope's opinions, adding that—in his view—Spaniards currently enjoy "the broadest religious, ideological and political freedoms."
