High Rating For Lagos But Chileans Looking Ahead
(CPOD) Apr. 12, 2003 - Chileans approve the performance of president Ricardo Lagos, but are already concentrating on the 2006 election, according to a poll by Opina published in El Mercurio. 70.3 per cent of respondents approve of Lagos' administration.
Joaquín Lavín, the current mayor of Santiago, is the first choice to be the next president for 40.65 per cent of respondents. Lavín lost a 2000 run-off to Lagos by a narrow margin.
Two women are regarded as possible presidential choices, and their election would be a first for the South American country. Foreign minister Soledad Alvear was mentioned by 21.3 per cent of respondents, and defence minister Michelle Bachelet by 14.5 per cent.
After the 17-year dictatorship of Augusto Pinochet came to an end in 1990, Chile has managed to hold peaceful democratic elections and avoid economic turmoil.
