Harper Remains Top Tory In Canada
(CPOD) Feb. 8, 2004 - Former Canadian Alliance leader Stephen Harper is the top candidate for the leadership of the Conservative Party of Canada, according to a poll by SES released by Sun Media. 27 per cent of respondents would support Harper, a seven per cent lead over and CEO of Magna International Belinda Stronach.
Former Ontario health minister Tony Clement was third with 13 per cent. The Conservative Party --formed after the union of the Progressive Conservatives and the Canadian Alliance-- will choose its federal leader on Mar. 20.
In an altered survey, where each candidate's biographical facts were offered instead of a name, Harper came out on top as well with 41 per cent, followed by Clement and Stronach.
Liberal Party leader Paul Martin took over as prime minister on Dec. 12, 2003. Although Martin does not have to hold a federal vote until November 2005, there is growing speculation about an election call in March or April 2004.
The Progressive Conservatives last formed the Canadian government from 1984 to 1993 under prime ministers Brian Mulroney and Kim Campbell.
