Harper, Martin Perform Best In Canada
(CPOD) Jun. 16, 2004 - Some Canadians believe Conservative leader Stephen Harper has led the best campaign in Canada's federal election, according to a poll by Léger Marketing. 23 per cent of respondents believe Harper has been the best performer in this year's electoral race.
Canadian voters will renew the House of Commons on Jun. 28. The Liberal party achieved three straight majority governments under Jean Chrétien in 1993, 1997 and 2000.
Current prime minister Paul Martin leads the ruling Liberal party into a federal election for the first time. 19 per cent say the present head of government has been the best performer so far, while 11 per cent choose Jack Layton of the New Democratic party, and six per cent pick Gilles Duceppe of the Bloc Québécois.
The Progressive Conservatives (PC) and the Canadian Alliance (CA) officially became a single party on Dec. 8, 2003, following a series of negotiations between then-Tory leader Peter MacKay and Alliance head Harper. On Mar. 20, the Conservatives picked Harper to steer the party into the federal election.
