(Angus Reid Global Scan) - Support for Republican United States congressman Mark Green increased in the Badger State, according to a poll by Strategic Vision. 46 per cent of respondents would vote for Green in the gubernatorial election, while 45 per cent would support Democratic incumbent Jim Doyle.

Doyle has acted as Wisconsin's governor since January 2003. The former state attorney general defeated Republican incumbent Scott McCallum and Libertarian candidate Ed Thompson in the November 2002 election with 45 per cent of the vote.

Green has served in the U.S. House of Representatives since 1988, and is currently the assistant majority whip. Support for Green increased by three points since late April, while backing for Doyle remained stable.

Yesterday, Doyle came out in support of stem cell research, saying, "(Families) hope that science may one day unlock the cures to diseases long thought incurable. We cannot turn our backs on these families. I'm urging Congress to allow funding for new research, and bring this bipartisan legislation to a vote before they adjourn in August."

The gubernatorial election is scheduled for Nov. 7. Since 1951, the Badger State has had six Republican and six Democratic heads of government.
