Angus Reid Global Monitor : Polls & Research
GOP’s Giuliani Ahead Of McCain For 2008
(Angus Reid Consultants - CPOD Global Scan) - Many Republican Party supporters would vote for former New York City mayor Rudy Giuliani in a presidential primary, according to a poll by Gallup released by CNN and USA Today. 34 per cent of respondents say they are most likely to back Giuliani.
Arizona senator John McCain is second with 29 per cent, followed by Florida governor Jeb Bush with 12 per cent and Tennessee senator Bill Frist with six per cent.
In American elections, candidates require 270 votes in the Electoral College to win the White House. Last November, Republican incumbent George W. Bush earned a second term after securing 286 electoral votes from 31 states.
Giuliani garnered national and international attention in the aftermath of the 9/11 terrorist attacks. In 2000, McCain won seven Republican presidential primaries in the United States, but retired from the race after eventual nominee Bush became the frontrunner.
