Rudy Giuliani
(Angus Reid Global Scan) - Three politicians have emerged as the top prospective presidential candidates for supporters of the Republican Party in the United States, according to a poll by Rasmussen Reports. 26 per cent of respondents would vote for former New York City mayor Rudy Giuliani in a primary election.
Current U.S. state secretary Condoleezza Rice is second with 24 per cent, followed by Arizona senator John McCain with 21 per cent. Support is lower for former House of Representatives speaker Newt Gingrich with seven per cent, and Tennessee senator Bill Frist with five per cent.
In a list that does not include any of the three perceived main contenders, Gingrich is first with 27 per cent, followed by Frist with 11 per cent. New York governor George Pataki, Virginia senator George Allen and Kansas senator Sam Brownback are in single digits, and 30 per cent of respondents are undecided.
In American elections, candidates require 270 votes in the Electoral College to win the White House. In November 2004, Republican George W. Bush earned a second term after securing 286 electoral votes from 31 states. Democratic nominee John Kerry received 252 electoral votes from 19 states and the District of Columbia.
Bush is ineligible for a third term in office. The next presidential election is scheduled for November 2008. There are discussions among some Republican grassroots supporters that a Giuliani-McCain ticket, with either one as president, would be ideal.
