Giuliani, McCain Top GOP Contenders for 2008

November 17, 2006

- Rudy Giuliani is holding on to the top position as a prospective 2008 United States presidential nominee for Republican Party supporters, according to a poll by Gallup released by USA Today. 28 per cent of respondents would vote for the former New York City mayor in a primary election.

Republican Arizona senator John McCain is second with 26 per cent, followed by current U.S. state secretary Condoleezza Rice with 13 per cent, former House of Representatives speaker Newt Gingrich with seven per cent, and Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney with five per cent.

Support is lower for Tennessee senator Bill Frist, Virginia senator George Allen, New York governor George Pataki, Arkansas governor Mike Huckabee, Nebraska senator Chuck Hagel, and Kansas senator Sam Brownback.

Giuliani garnered national and international attention in the aftermath of the 9/11 terrorist attacks. In 2000, McCain won seven Republican presidential primaries in the U.S., but retired from the race after eventual nominee George W. Bush became the frontrunner. Rice has said she has no intention of becoming a presidential candidate.

On Nov. 10, papers were filed in New York to establish Giuliani's presidential exploratory committee. On Nov. 13, Giuliani spokeswoman Sunny Mindel explained the situation, saying, "With the filing of this document, we have taken the necessary legal steps so an organization can be put in place and money can be raised to explore a possible presidential run in 2008."

In American elections, candidates require 270 votes in the Electoral College to win the White House. In November 2004, Republican George W. Bush earned a second term after securing 286 electoral votes from 31 states. Democratic nominee John Kerry received 252 electoral votes from 19 states and the District of Columbia.

Bush is ineligible for a third term in office. The next presidential election is scheduled for November 2008.
