Giuliani Leads Hillary, Obama for 2008 Vote

February 18, 2007

(Angus Reid Global Monitor) - Republican Rudy Giuliani leads two prospective Democratic presidential nominees in the United States, according to a poll by Opinion Dynamics released by Fox News. 49 per cent of respondents would vote for the former New York City mayor in 2008, while 40 per cent would support New York senator Hillary Rodham Clinton.

In a contest pitting Giuliani against Illinois senator Barack Obama, the Republican holds a six-point advantage.

On Feb. 16, Giuliani expressed his support for appointing "strict constructionists" to the judiciary, adding, "What I mean by strict constructionist, or using the plain language or meaning of the Constitution, is judges should try to interpret the Constitution, not make it up to fit their social preferences."

In American elections, candidates require 270 votes in the Electoral College to win the White House. In November 2004, Republican George W. Bush earned a second term after securing 286 electoral votes from 31 states. Democratic nominee John Kerry received 252 electoral votes from 19 states and the District of Columbia.

Bush is ineligible for a third term in office. The next presidential election is scheduled for November 2008.
