Germans Want Full Disclosure From Politicians

January 15, 2005

(Angus Reid - CPOD Global Scan) - Many adults in Germany believe lawmakers should reveal details of all pay earned alongside their regular compensation, according to a poll by FG Wahlen released by ZDF. 79 per cent of respondents would like to amend existing regulations.

German legislators must declare any secondary income higher than $3,900 U.S. a month or $23,400 U.S. a year. The monthly salary of lawmakers in the European country is $9,112 U.S. before taxes.

In December, the opposition Christian-Democratic Union (CDU) faced a crisis as a series of investigative reports found that secretary-general Laurenz Meyer continued to receive payments from energy company RWE after he was appointed as a party official in 2000.

On Dec. 20, CDU leader Angela Merkel said Meyer would be allowed to remain in his position after he "admitted a mistake." Two days later, Merkel accepted Meyer's resignation.
