(CPOD) May 5, 2004 - Germans are divided over the enlargement of the European Union (EU), according to a poll by FG Whalen released by ZDF. 55 per cent of respondents believe the results will be positive, while 400 per cent disagree.

Ten countries—Cyprus, the Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Malta, Poland, Slovakia and Slovenia—officially joined the EU on May 1.

A continental summit designed to approve the European Constitution failed on Dec. 14, 2003, after several leaders failed to agree on a controversial vote allocation system.

Angela Merkel, the leader of Germany's Christian-Democratic Union (CDU), caused a row in February when she suggested that the EU should consider granting Turkey only a "privileged partnership" as opposed to full membership.
