Angus Reid Global Monitor : Polls & Research
German Conservatives Still in First Place
(Angus Reid Global Monitor) - The Christian-Democratic Union (CDU) and the Bavarian Christian-Social Party (CSU) remain popular in Germany, according to a poll by Forsa released by Stern and RTL. 38 per cent of respondents would vote for either of the two conservative parties in the next federal election.
The Social Democratic Party (SPD) is second with 26 per cent, followed by the Left Party (Linke) with 11 per cent, the Free Democratic Party (FDP) with 10 per cent, and the Green Party (Grune) also with 10 per cent.
Official results from the September 2005 election to the Federal Diet gave the CDU and the CSU 226 seats, with the SPD a close second with 222 legislators. Neither of the two main parties was able to assemble a coalition government with their preferred partners. In November 2005, CDU leader Angela Merkel was sworn in as Germany’s first female head of government. The current administration includes members of the CDU, CSU and SPD.
On Dec. 28, Merkel discussed her views on international relations, declaring, "The classical division between inner and foreign policy is outdated. We must make sure that we—as European and Atlantic partners—show solidarity for each other and that we don’t let anybody drive a wedge between us. Europe has a responsibility to find a solution (in Kosovo). The solution must offer clarity for the entire region and provide the opportunity for stability and security, thereby creating the foundation for a positive future."
