(CPOD) May 1, 2003 - Dick Gephardt is the favourite presidential hopeful for Democrat voters in Iowa, according to a poll by Zogby. The Missouri congressman was the first choice for 25 per cent of respondents, followed by Massachusetts senator John Kerry with 13 per cent. Connecticut senator Joe Lieberman—who leads in other state polls—was third with nine per cent.
The apparent success of the war in Iraq has not significantly affected the number of Democrats who believe president George W. Bush will get a second term at the White House. 61 per cent of respondents say Bush's reelection is very or somewhat likely.
Iowa will hold the Democratic presidential caucus on Jan. 19, 2004, the first actual vote to gauge a candidate's ultimate chances.
