Fujimori Is Best Peruvian President

(CPOD) Aug. 29, 2003 - Peruvians rate Alberto Fujimori as their best president since 1980, according to a poll by CPEM. 38 per cent of respondents choose the now-exiled former head of state over five other leaders.

Fernando Balaunde and Valentin Paniagua were the only other ex-presidents with more than 10 per cent. Current head of state Alejandro Toledo was last, with 7.7 per cent.

Fujimori is currently living in Japan, where the absence of an extradition treaty with Peru makes his arrest for alleged human rights abuses difficult. The former president has defended himself through a website, and is said to be preparing a political comeback.
