French Worried Over Pension Reforms

April 09, 2003

(CPOD) Apr. 9, 2003 - A government proposal to reform the French pension system is being met with concern from the public, according to a poll by BVA for Le Bleu. 49 per cent of respondents say the project is "not going well."

Pension reform was a major issue during the 2002 electoral campaign. Upon his re-election, president Jacques Chirac vowed to aid the retirement system for France's aging population. Other European countries are facing similar problems, due to a drop in birth rates and tougher immigration laws.

Under the current system, workers pay contributions, which are then allotted to those in retirement. Last February, French prime minister Jean-Pierre Raffarin introduced a national debate on the issue, but the idea was met with mass union demonstrations throughout the country.
