French Voters Suggest Sarkozy-Jospin Duel in 2007
(Angus Reid Global Scan) - Many adults in France would like current interior minister and Union for a Popular Movement (UMP) leader Nicolas Sarkozy to run for president, according to a poll by CSA published in Le Parisien. 43 per cent of respondents would prefer Sarkozy as the nominee for the centre-right party.
Current prime minister Dominique de Villepin is second with 19 per cent, followed by employment minister Jean-Louis Borloo with 15 per cent, defence minister Michèle Alliot-Marie with 13 per cent, and current head of state Jacques Chirac with 10 per cent. Support is lower for former prime minister Alain Juppé, foreign minister Philippe Douste-Blazy and former prime minister Jean-Pierre Raffarin. In a sample of UMP voters, Sarkozy is first with 28 per cent.
As far as possible contenders from the Socialist Party (PS), former presidential candidate and prime minister Lionel Jospin is first with 19 per cent, followed by former finance minister Dominique Strauss-Kahn with 18 per cent.
Regional leader Ségolène Royal and former culture and education minister Jack Lang are tied with 14 per cent, followed by Paris mayor Bertrand Delanoë with 12 per cent, and former health minister Bernard Kouchner and former prime minister Laurent Fabius with 11 per cent. Support is lower for current PS leader François Hollande, former employment minister Martine Aubry, lawyer Arnaud Montebourg and former Socialist leader Henri Emmanuelli.
Chirac won the presidential ballot in 1995, and was re-elected in a run-off over Jean-Marie Le Pen in May 2002. The next election is tentatively scheduled for April 2007.
