Dominique de Villepin

(CPOD) Sept. 18, 2004 - There is no clear consensus on who should become France's prime minister in case Jean-Pierre Raffarin is replaced, according to a poll by BVA published in L'Express. 18 per cent of respondents would prefer current interior minister Dominique de Villepin, while 15 per cent would choose employment minister Jean-Louis Borloo.

Raffarin has headed the French government since May 2002. His administration is planning a budget freeze on state spending for 2005. A series of reforms to the health service and the pension system resulted in acute losses for the ruling centre-right parties in this year's regional and European Parliament elections.

Defence minister Michelle Alliot-Marie, health and social protection minister Philippe Douste-Blazy, National Assembly chairman Jean-Louis Debré and national education minister François Fillon also registered some support.
