French President Still Below 40% Mark

August 09, 2008

(Angus Reid Global Monitor) - Nicolas Sarkozy has failed to sway many people in France, according to a poll by Ipsos published in Le Point. 39 per cent of respondents have a favourable opinion of the president’s performance, up one point since June.

In May 2007, Sarkozy, candidate for the centre-right Union for a Popular Movement (UMP) and former interior minister, won the presidential run-off with 53.06 per cent of the vote. Sarkozy appointed François Fillon—who had been his adviser and presidential campaign leader—as prime minister. 48 per cent of respondents hold a favourable view of Fillon’s performance as prime minister, down one point in a month.

On Aug. 5, Sarkozy announced major reforms to the country’s media regulations. Among other things, the plan includes withdrawing all advertising from public broadcast channels beginning next year. The president said this is necessary to end "the tyranny of ratings" and improve content and quality standards. Critics say that the government is directly benefitting private broadcasters, since advertisers would rely more heavily on them.
