French Have Mostly Positive View Of Pope
(CPOD) Aug. 17, 2004 - Residents of France support most of the ideas expressed by the head of the Catholic Church, according to a poll by CSA published in La-Croix. 79 per cent of respondents believe John Paul II has had a positive influence in advancing peace, while 76 per cent support his efforts on human rights.
In 1978, the Polish-born Karol Wojtyla became the first non-Italian in more than four centuries to ascend the papacy. The Pope's views on third world countries, family values, social justice and spirituality are backed by more than half of all respondents in France.
Only 37 per cent of respondents agree with the Pope's views on personal and sexual morality. John Paul II staunchly opposes birth control and abortion. Last year, the Church expressed its position on same-sex marriage, asking all Catholics—and especially Catholic politicians—to oppose the legal recognition of gay and lesbian partners.
The Pope visited France for the seventh time this past weekend. His fragile state—affected by Parkinson's Disease—has led to questions over a possible removal, although Vatican rules establish that a pontiff must serve until his death.
