French Back Sarkozy’s New Role
(CPOD) May 6, 2004 - Citizens of France think Nicolas Sarkozy will do a good job as the country's new finance minister, according to a poll by CSA published in L'Expansion. 66 per cent of respondents say Sarkozy's tenure will be positive.
Centre-right parties had a dismal showing in the Mar. 28 regional elections, and a series of cabinet changes were announced on Mar. 31. Sarkozy—who had acted as the country's interior minister since 2002—was switched to finance.
Sarkozy is considered as a possible presidential candidate in the 2007 election. 60 per cent of respondents say his main difficulty in his new role would be to convince the French public that a series of unpopular reforms—which include changes to the pension system—are required.
