(Angus Reid Global Scan) - Nobel Peace Prize laureate Oscar Arias Sanchez is the early favorite in Costa Rica's next presidential election, according to a poll by CID-Gallup published in La Republica. 35 per cent of respondents would support the former president in the 2006 vote.

Otton Solis of the Citizens Action Party (PAC) and Rafael Angel Calderon of the ruling Social-Christian Unity (PSUC) also registered some support. The approval rating for current president Abel Pacheco has dropped in the last few months.

The Costa Rican Legislative Assembly opted to bring back presidential re-election, after several opinion polls showed the population supported the idea. Arias ruled the country from 1986 to 1990, and is still regarded for his democratic proposals and actions on how to deal with violence in Central America. Calderon was president from 1990 to 1994.
