FMLN Still On Top In El Salvador
(CPOD) Jun. 5, 2003 - The Farabundo Marti National Liberation Front (FMLN) holds a commanding lead over the ruling Nationalist Republican Alliance (ARENA) in El Salvador, according to a poll by Universidad Centroamericana. 40.6 per cent of respondents would vote for the FMLN in the 2004 presidential election, while 23.9 per cent would support ARENA.
The FMLN—a party assembled by former guerrilla leaders—recently announced two possible presidential candidates, Schafik Handal and Óscar Ortiz. A primary election will take place on Jul. 27.
A man who holds no political affiliation is the top figure in the country. 20.8 per cent of respondents say they would vote for television journalist Mauricio Funes if he decided to run for office. Former education minister Evelyn Jacir de Lovo is second, with 6.6 per cent, followed by former president Alfredo Cristiani.
