Flag, Armed Forces Make Canadians Proud

July 01, 2008

(Angus Reid Global Monitor) - The flag and the armed forces are the foremost sources of pride for Canadians, according to a poll by Angus Reid Strategies. 86 per cent of respondents are very or moderately proud of the Canadian flag, and 80 per cent feel the same way about their armed forces.

Hockey is third on the list with 71 per cent, followed by the Canadian economy with 62 per cent, multiculturalism with 61 per cent, the state of democracy in Canada with 57 per cent, bilingualism with 52 per cent, Aboriginal culture with 51 per cent, and the health care system with 50 per cent.

Conversely, 55 per cent of respondents express being not too proud or nor proud at all about both the Canadian justice system and the Monarchy, and 62 per cent feel the same way about Parliament.

In 1867, the British America Act united four British colonies as provinces into the Dominion of Canada. Six more entities on the North American landmass would also go on to join the confederation of Canada, which was granted full autonomy from Britain following the passage of the Statute of Westminster in 1931.

Yesterday, Canadian prime minister Stephen Harper issued a statement marking Canada Day, saying, "Together, we are rich in opportunity and diversity, French and English, aboriginal and multicultural, native-born and newcomers. And together, we are making a positive difference in the world, led by the brave men and women of the Canadian Forces in Afghanistan."
