(Angus Reid - CPOD Global Scan) - Foreign minister Joschka Fischer is the best-rated public servant in Germany, according to a poll by Infratest-Dimap. 80 per cent of respondents are satisfied with Fischer's performance.

Federal president Horst Koehler is second on the list with 66 per cent, followed by chancellor Gerhard Schroeder of the Social Democratic Party (SPD) with 47 per cent.

On Dec. 26, large areas of Asia and parts of Africa were ravaged by the worst earthquake and tsunamis to hit the regions in four decades. More than 155,000 people have died, including at least 60 German citizens.

On Jan. 4, Schroeder committed $686 million U.S. in aid to the afflicted countries, making Germany the biggest donor to date. Three German cities—Hamburg, Bremen and Luebeck—will also participate in reconstruction efforts.

Bavarian Christian-Social Party (CSU) leader Edmund Stoiber is fourth with 39 per cent, followed by economy minister Wolfgang Clement, Christian-Democratic Union (CDU) head Angela Merkel and Free Democratic Party (FDP) leader Guido Westerwelle.

The next parliamentary ballot is tentatively scheduled for September 2006.
