(Angus Reid Consultants - CPOD Global Scan) - Foreign minister Joschka Fischer is the top rated public servant in Germany, according to a poll by Infratest-Dimap. 59 per cent of respondents are satisfied with Fischer's performance as foreign minister.

Interior minister Otto Schily and chancellor Gerhard Schroeder of the Social Democratic Party (SPD) were next on the list with 57 per cent and 44 per cent respectively.

Fischer—the leader of the Green Party (Grune)—faced criticism last month for signing a directive that eases regulations on visas granted by German embassies and consulates. Christian-Democratic Union (CDU) leader Angela Merkel contends the decision allowed illegal immigrants to enter the country. 43 per cent of respondents are satisfied with Merkel's performance.

Bavarian Christian-Social Party (CSU) leader Edmund Stoiber is next with 40 per cent, followed by Lower Saxony premier Christian Wulff and SPD chairman Franz Muentefering. Finance minister Hans Eichel, economy minister Wolfgang Clement and Free Democratic Party (FDP) leader Guido Westerwelle had the lowest numbers.

The Greens are currently the SPD's coalition partner in the federal administration. The next parliamentary election is tentatively scheduled for September 2006.
