(Angus Reid Global Monitor) - The governing Direction-Social Democracy (Smer) party continues to lead in Slovakia, according to a poll by UVVM. 48.5 per cent of respondents would vote for current prime minister Robert Fico’s party in the next legislative election, up 1.3 points since June.

The Slovak National Party (SNS) is second with 11.4 per cent, followed by the Slovak Democratic and Christian Union (SDKU) with 9.7 per cent, the Movement for a Democratic Slovakia (HZDS) with 9.6 per cent, the Party of the Hungarian Coalition (SMK) with 8.4 per cent, and the Christian Democratic Movement (KDH) with 8.2 per cent. Support is lower for the Slovak Communist Party (KSS), the Movement for Democracy (HZD), the Free Forum (SF), and the New Civic Alliance (ANO).

Slovak voters renewed their legislative branch in June 2006. Final results placed Smer—led by Fico—as the top party in the European country with 50 seats. In July, Fico officially took over as prime minister, in a coalition encompassing Smer, the SNS and the HZDS.

Earlier this month, Fico voiced his displeasure with the Czech Republic and Poland participating in a missile defence system with the United States, saying, "We are a little nervous about it because we do not want to have either radars or missiles behind our backs." The prime minister added that he would have never agreed to join the project and allow the installation of radar bases, declaring, "If anyone asked us for it, we would say a clear no, never on our territory."
