Fernández Ready For Dominican Comeback

(CPOD) Jul. 19, 2003 - Former president Leonel Fernández remains a key political figure in the Dominican Republic, according to a poll by Omnimedia Gallup. 51.2 per cent respondents in the Caribbean country would vote for Fernández in the 2004 presidential election.

Fernández administered the government from 1996 to 2000, after winning an election as the candidate for the Dominican Liberation Party (PLD). Eduardo Estrella of the Social Christian Reformist Party (PRSC) is second with 12.7 per cent.

Support for current president Hipólito Mejía of the Dominican Revolutionary Party (PRD) is at 8.7 per cent. The election is scheduled for May 16, 2004.
