Failing Grade For Bolaños In Nicaragua

(CPOD) Jul. 22, 2003 - Enrique Bolaños is losing public support in Nicaragua, according to a poll by Confidencial. Respondents rate the president with a 3.7 on a scale of one to 10.

The president—elected in November 2001 with 56.3 per cent of the vote—has faced public scrutiny over allegations that public funds were used to finance his campaign.

Nicaraguans are already looking ahead to the next presidential election, but not very enthusiastically. Former president Daniel Ortega—supported by only 14 per cent of respondents—is the top man to replace Bolaños. Ortega, who ruled the country in the late 1980s, has been a losing candidate in elections held in 1990, 1996 and 2001.
