Euro To Be Rejected In Sweden

August 15, 2003

Three EU member states are not using this coin yet.

(CPOD) Aug. 15, 2003 - Swede voters appear to be leaning towards keeping the Krona as the national monetary unit, according to a poll by Gallup. 45 per cent of respondents reject a switch to the common European currency.

Sweden will hold a referendum on Sept. 14, to decide whether or not to adopt the Euro, which has been used in 12 of the 15 European Union (EU) countries since Jan. 1, 2002. Sweden, Denmark and Great Britain are the only current EU members that have not adopted the currency.

Prime minister Goeran Persson, who is heading the "Yes" side, has campaigned extensively in the past few days, arguing that the Euro will bring benefits to consumers and help Sweden's stature in the continent.
