EU More Appealing Than NATO In Ukraine

July 08, 2003

(CPOD) Jul. 8, 2003 - Ukrainian citizens want to become members of the European Union (EU), according to a poll by the Razumkov Institute. 64.8 per cent of respondents support their country's plan to join the continental alliance by 2010.

Recent plebiscites held in Malta, Lithuania, Hungary, Slovakia, Slovenia, Poland and the Czech Republic have resulted in victories for the pro-European sides.

The push for a broader presence in Europe contrasts with opposition to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO). Only 23 per cent of respondents support joining the military alliance.
