Estonians Split Over European Union

(CPOD) Jul. 6, 2003 - Estonian citizens have not fully made up their minds about joining the European Union (EU), according to a poll by TNS Emor. 48 per cent of respondents support the idea, while 45 per cent refuse it.
In May, right after neighbouring Lithuania voted to join the EU, pro-Europe support was at 55 per cent. Malta, Slovenia, Hungary, Slovakia and Poland have also held positive EU referenda in the past few months.
The Estonian plebiscite will take place on Sept. 14, 2003.
