Angus Reid Global Monitor : Polls & Research
Edwards at 49% Against Giuliani, Thompson in U.S.
(Angus Reid Global Monitor) - Democrat John Edwards is ahead of two prospective Republican presidential nominees in the United States, according to a poll by Rasmussen Reports. 49 per cent of respondents would vote for the former North Carolina senator in the 2008 election, while 41 per cent would support former New York City mayor Rudy Giuliani.
Support for Edwards in this match-up increased by three points since early August, while backing for Giuliani fell by the same margin. In a separate contest, Edwards holds a 14-point advantage over actor and former Tennessee senator Fred Thompson.
Yesterday, former U.S. president Jimmy Carter praised Edwards, saying, "I can say without equivocation that no one who is running for president has presented anywhere near as comprehensive and accurate a prediction of what our country ought to do in the field of environmental quality, in the field of health care for those who are not presently insured, for those who struggle with poverty."
In American elections, candidates require 270 votes in the Electoral College to win the White House. In November 2004, Republican George W. Bush earned a second term after securing 286 electoral votes from 31 states. Democratic nominee John Kerry received 252 electoral votes from 19 states and the District of Columbia.
Bush is ineligible for a third term in office. The next presidential election is scheduled for November 2008.
