Economy On Top Of American Minds

April 26, 2003

(CPOD) Apr. 26, 2003 - The attention of Americans appears to have shifted to financial matters, according to a poll by Gallup released by CNN and USA Today. 53 per cent of respondents say the economy is the most important issue.

While there has been no decline in the United States Gross Domestic Product (GDP) for two consecutive quarters, 56 per cent of respondents believe the country is in a recession.

Several Democratic presidential hopefuls have been eager to discuss financial matters, in an effort to push forward a debate that echoes the 1992 U.S. presidential race. In that election, Bill Clinton's focus on the economy countered high post-war numbers for then-president George H. Bush.
