Deploy Troops To Liberia, Say Americans

(CPOD) Aug. 10, 2003 - Americans want their government to intervene in the Liberian conflict, according to a poll by the Program on International Policy Attitudes. 48 per cent of respondents support the deployment of troops in the West African nation.

Liberia underwent 14 years of civil war, and a current two-month uprising has killed more than 1,000 civilians. Two armed groups are demanding the resignation of president Charles Taylor.

A team of seven U.S. Marines arrived in Liberia on Aug. 6, in the start of peacekeeping operations.

Polling Data

President Bush is considering sending approximately 2,000 marines to Liberia to be part of a U.N. peacekeeping mission along with several thousand troops from other countries. Would you approve or disapprove of this?
