Democrats 2008: Obama 47%, Hillary 44%
(Angus Reid Global Monitor) - The race for the Democratic Party’s presidential nomination in the United States remains close, according to a poll by Gallup released by USA Today. 47 per cent of respondents would back Illinois senator Barack Obama, while 44 per cent would support New York senator Hillary Rodham Clinton.
After the first 32 Democratic presidential caucuses and primaries have been held, Obama has secured the support of 1,253 pledged delegates and super-delegates, followed by Rodham Clinton with 1,211.
Yesterday, Rodham Clinton criticized Obama, saying, "Speeches don’t put food on the table. Speeches don’t fill up your tank, or fill your prescription, or do anything about that stack of bills that keeps you up at night. You fill up your tank, and that’s two twenties from your wallet. You pick up a gallon of milk and a few other things—and there goes another."
In American elections, candidates require 270 votes in the Electoral College to win the White House. In November 2004, Republican George W. Bush earned a second term after securing 286 electoral votes from 31 states. Kerry received 252 electoral votes from 19 states and the District of Columbia.
Bush is ineligible for a third term in office. The presidential election is scheduled for Nov. 4.
