Democrats 2008: Hillary Holds Seven-Point Edge
(Angus Reid Global Monitor) - Many Democratic Party supporters in the United States would like to have Hillary Rodham Clinton as their presidential candidate in 2008, according to a poll by SRBI Public Affairs released by Time. 31 per cent of respondents would vote for the New York senator in a 2008 primary.
Illinois senator Barack Obama is second with 24 per cent, followed by former North Carolina senator John Edwards with 16 per cent, and former U.S. vice-president Al Gore with 15 per cent. Support is lower for New Mexico governor Bill Richardson, Delaware senator Joe Biden, and Connecticut senator Chris Dodd.
On Mar. 30, Edwards announced that his campaign has amassed $2.03 million U.S. through Internet fundraising, declaring, "Right now, as never before, your contributions have the power to shape the future of this campaign. Please dig deep and give whatever you can, knowing that every dollar you add today will have an unprecedented power to make the vision we share a reality."
In American elections, candidates require 270 votes in the Electoral College to win the White House. In November 2004, Republican George W. Bush earned a second term after securing 286 electoral votes from 31 states. Democratic nominee John Kerry received 252 electoral votes from 19 states and the District of Columbia.
Bush is ineligible for a third term in office. The next presidential election is scheduled for November 2008.
