(Angus Reid Global Monitor) - Hillary Rodham Clinton remains the most popular presidential hopeful for Democratic Party supporters in the United States, according to a poll by SRBI Public Affairs released by Time. 34 per cent of respondents would vote for the New York senator in a 2008 presidential primary.

Illinois senator Barack Obama is second with 26 per cent, followed by former U.S. vice-president Al Gore with 13 per cent, and former North Carolina senator John Edwards with 10 per cent. Support is lower for New Mexico governor Bill Richardson, Ohio congressman Dennis Kucinich, Delaware senator Joe Biden and reverend Al Sharpton.

On Mar. 23, former U.S. president Bill Clinton discussed his wife's controversial 2002 vote in favour of the war in Iraq, saying, "I don't have a problem with anything Barack Obama said on this," but "to characterize Hillary and Obama's positions on the war as polar opposites is ludicrous. This dichotomy that's been set up to allow him to become the raging hero of the anti-war crowd on the Internet is just factually inaccurate."

In American elections, candidates require 270 votes in the Electoral College to win the White House. In November 2004, Republican George W. Bush earned a second term after securing 286 electoral votes from 31 states. Democratic nominee John Kerry received 252 electoral votes from 19 states and the District of Columbia.

Bush is ineligible for a third term in office. The next presidential election is scheduled for November 2008.
