Democrats 2008: Hillary at 43%, Obama 24%

November 05, 2007

(Angus Reid Global Monitor) - Many Democratic Party supporters in the United States would prefer to have Hillary Rodham Clinton as their presidential nominee in 2008, according to a poll by Princeton Survey Research Associates released by Newsweek. 43 per cent of respondents choose the New York senator.

Illinois senator Barack Obama is second with 24 per cent, followed by former North Carolina senator John Edwards with 12 per cent. Support is lower for Delaware senator Joe Biden, Ohio congressman Dennis Kucinich, and New Mexico governor Bill Richardson.

On Nov. 3, Edwards discussed environmental issues, saying, "This is the great moral test of our generation. Are we actually going to leave this planet and America better for our children than we found it? Why have we not addressed the issue of climate change and global warming? I’ll tell you why, no question about it: oil companies, gas companies, power companies and the lobbyists in Washington, D.C. We have to have a president who will stand up to these people."

In American elections, candidates require 270 votes in the Electoral College to win the White House. In November 2004, Republican George W. Bush earned a second term after securing 286 electoral votes from 31 states. Democratic nominee John Kerry received 252 electoral votes from 19 states and the District of Columbia.

Bush is ineligible for a third term in office. The next presidential election is scheduled for November 2008.
