(Angus Reid Global Monitor) - Democratic Party supporters in the United States have two favourites for the 2008 United States presidential election, according to a poll by Harris Interactive. 41 per cent of respondents say they would consider voting for New York senator Hillary Rodham Clinton, and 41 per cent would consider backing Illinois senator Barack Obama.

Former North Carolina senator John Edwards and former U.S. vice-president Al Gore are tied with 29 per cent, followed by Massachusetts senator John Kerry with 14 per cent, and Connecticut senator Joe Lieberman with 10 per cent.

The remaining politicians—including declared presidential contenders such as New Mexico governor Bill Richardson, Delaware senator Joe Biden and Ohio congressman Dennis Kucinich—are in single digits.

On Mar. 15, Edwards discussed his plans to help the developing world, saying, "I believe by making education available to 100 million children growing up in parts of the world that are highly susceptible to extreme ideology, and in some cases extremely violent ideology, we can (combat terrorism)."

In American elections, candidates require 270 votes in the Electoral College to win the White House. In November 2004, Republican George W. Bush earned a second term after securing 286 electoral votes from 31 states. Kerry received 252 electoral votes from 19 states and the District of Columbia.

Bush is ineligible for a third term in office. The next presidential election is scheduled for November 2008.
