(Angus Reid Global Monitor) - Many Democratic Party supporters in the United States would vote for Hillary Rodham Clinton in a presidential primary, according to a poll by TNS released by the Washington Post and ABC News. 53 per cent of respondents would back the New York senator in 2008, up four points since November.

Illinois senator Barack Obama is second with 23 per cent, followed by former North Carolina senator John Edwards with 10 per cent. Support is lower for Delaware senator Joe Biden, New Mexico governor Bill Richardson, and Ohio congressman Dennis Kucinich.

On Dec. 12, Edwards discussed the war in Iraq, saying, "Let’s acknowledge that (the surge) has resulted in some reduction in violence. But what Bush said is the reason for the surge was to create an environment where there could be some reconciliation between Sunni and Shia, and there’s been no progress on that front."

In American elections, candidates require 270 votes in the Electoral College to win the White House. In November 2004, Republican George W. Bush earned a second term after securing 286 electoral votes from 31 states. Democratic nominee John Kerry received 252 electoral votes from 19 states and the District of Columbia.

Bush is ineligible for a third term in office. The next presidential election is scheduled for November 2008.
