Democrats 2008: Hillary 47%, Obama 37%

February 02, 2008

(Angus Reid Global Monitor) - Hillary Rodham Clinton keeps the upper hand in the national race for the Democratic Party’s presidential nomination in the United States, according to a poll by Opinion Dynamics released by Fox News. 47 per cent of respondents would vote for the New York senator in a primary.

Illinois senator Barack Obama is second with 37 per cent, up 17 points since mid-December.

After the first four Democratic presidential caucuses and primaries have been held, Rodham Clinton has secured the support of 232 pledged delegates and super-delegates, followed by Obama with 158.

Yesterday, Obama criticized Rodham Clinton’s stance on the Iraq war, saying, "There is a sharp contrast in our attitude with respect to how we got into Iraq. I thought (she) described some of her approaches for going forward, but still has not adequately explained her vote to go into Iraq. Again, I think that’s important because it speaks to the judgement that is going to be applied to future conflicts."

In American elections, candidates require 270 votes in the Electoral College to win the White House. In November 2004, Republican George W. Bush earned a second term after securing 286 electoral votes from 31 states. Kerry received 252 electoral votes from 19 states and the District of Columbia.

Bush is ineligible for a third term in office. The presidential election is scheduled for Nov. 4.
