(Angus Reid Global Monitor) - Hillary Rodham Clinton is the most popular presidential contender for Democratic Party supporters in the United States, according to a poll by the Pew Research Center for the People and the Press. 46 per cent of respondents would like to see the New York senator as their 2008 nominee, down two points since November.

Illinois senator Barack Obama is second with 26 per cent, followed by former North Carolina senator John Edwards with 14 per cent. Support is lower for New Mexico governor Bill Richardson, Delaware senator Joe Biden, and Ohio congressman Dennis Kucinich.

Yesterday, Kucinich filed a lawsuit to get his name on the Texas primary ballot. Kucinich was left out after he chose not to abide by a loyalty oath, basically swearing to support whoever becomes the Democratic Party’s presidential nominee. Country music singer Willie Nelson—who filed the lawsuit along with Kucinich—declared: "He’s right to challenge a blind loyalty oath to the Democratic Party because it’s un-American."

In American elections, candidates require 270 votes in the Electoral College to win the White House. In November 2004, Republican George W. Bush earned a second term after securing 286 electoral votes from 31 states. Democratic nominee John Kerry received 252 electoral votes from 19 states and the District of Columbia.

Bush is ineligible for a third term in office. The presidential election is scheduled for Nov. 4.
