(Angus Reid Global Monitor) - Hillary Rodham Clinton remains the national presidential frontrunner for Democratic Party supporters in the United States, according to a poll by Gallup and USA Today. 45 per cent of respondents would back the New York senator for the party’s nomination, up 12 points since early January.

Illinois senator Barack Obama is second with 33 per cent, followed by former North Carolina senator John Edwards with 13 per cent, Ohio congressman Dennis Kucinich with one per cent, and former Alaska senator Mike Gravel also with one per cent.

Yesterday, Edwards’ campaign manager David Bonior discussed the current state of affairs, saying, "We’re committed to making sure the voices of all the voters in the remaining 47 states are heard. The nomination won’t be decided by win-loss records, but by delegates, and we’re ready to fight for every delegate."

In American elections, candidates require 270 votes in the Electoral College to win the White House. In November 2004, Republican George W. Bush earned a second term after securing 286 electoral votes from 31 states. Democratic nominee John Kerry received 252 electoral votes from 19 states and the District of Columbia.

Bush is ineligible for a third term in office. The presidential election is scheduled for Nov. 4.
