Democrats 2008: Hillary 39%, Obama 38%
(Angus Reid Global Monitor) - The national race for the Democratic Party’s presidential nomination in the United States is very close, according to a poll by Zogby International and Reuters. 39 per cent of respondents would vote for the New York senator Hillary Rodham Clinton in a primary, while 38 per cent would back Illinois senator Barack Obama.
Former North Carolina senator John Edwards is third with nine per cent, followed by Ohio congressman Dennis Kucinich with one per cent.
On Jan. 19, after winning the Nevada caucus, Rodham Clinton declared: "I think that the people of Nevada, they want somebody who’s going to give them solutions, not just rhetoric. They want to hear what it is you’re going to do, and I have been very specific about my plans, because I want to be held accountable."
In American elections, candidates require 270 votes in the Electoral College to win the White House. In November 2004, Republican George W. Bush earned a second term after securing 286 electoral votes from 31 states. Democratic nominee John Kerry received 252 electoral votes from 19 states and the District of Columbia.
Bush is ineligible for a third term in office. The presidential election is scheduled for Nov. 4.
