Democrats 2008: Hillary 38%, Obama 25%
(Angus Reid Global Monitor) - Hillary Rodham Clinton is holding on to the top position among Democratic Party supporters in the United States, according to a poll by American Research Group. 38 per cent of respondents would vote for the New York senator in a 2008 presidential primary.
Illinois senator Barack Obama is second with 25 per cent, followed by former North Carolina senator John Edwards with 16 per cent. Support is lower for New Mexico governor Bill Richardson, Delaware senator Joe Biden, retired general Wesley Clark, Ohio congressman Dennis Kucinich, Connecticut senator Chris Dodd, and former Alaska senator Mike Gravel.
Yesterday, Dodd discussed his environmental policies, saying, "If we don't preserve this planet, the other issues will be less-than-significant. I don't know of anyone running for president who disagrees with the goals. (...) (Protecting the environment) is within our grasp. It's also in our grasp to mess this up to the point future generations will not be able to clean it up."
In American elections, candidates require 270 votes in the Electoral College to win the White House. In November 2004, Republican George W. Bush earned a second term after securing 286 electoral votes from 31 states. Democratic nominee John Kerry received 252 electoral votes from 19 states and the District of Columbia.
Bush is ineligible for a third term in office. The next presidential election is scheduled for November 2008.
