Democrats 2008: Hillary 36%, Obama 22%
(Angus Reid Global Monitor) - Many Democratic Party supporters in the United States would like Hillary Rodham Clinton to become their presidential nominee in 2008, according to a poll by Gallup released by USA Today. 36 per cent of respondents would vote for the New York senator in a 2008 primary.
Illinois senator Barack Obama is second with 22 per cent, followed by former U.S. vice-president Al Gore with 18 per cent, and former North Carolina senator John Edwards with nine per cent. Support is lower for Delaware senator Joe Biden, retired general Wesley Clark, New Mexico governor Bill Richardson, and Alaska senator Mike Gravel.
On Mar. 9 in Iowa, Edwards discussed his views on the country's medical services, saying, "We have a dysfunctional health-care system. (My plan) is based on the concept of all of us taking some responsibility so that we can make universal health care available. We're going to bring down the cost of health care in America dramatically."
In American elections, candidates require 270 votes in the Electoral College to win the White House. In November 2004, Republican George W. Bush earned a second term after securing 286 electoral votes from 31 states. Democratic nominee John Kerry received 252 electoral votes from 19 states and the District of Columbia.
Bush is ineligible for a third term in office. The next presidential election is scheduled for November 2008.
