Angus Reid Global Monitor : Polls & Research
Democrats 2008: Hillary 33%, Obama 33%
(Angus Reid Global Monitor) - Fewer Democratic Party supporters in the United States want Hillary Rodham Clinton as their presidential nominee this year, according to a poll by Gallup released by USA Today. 33 per cent of respondents would vote for the New York senator in a primary, down 12 points since mid-December.
Illinois senator Barack Obama is tied for first place with 33 per cent, followed by former North Carolina senator John Edwards with 20 per cent. Support is lower for Ohio congressman Dennis Kucinich and New Mexico governor Bill Richardson.
On Jan. 6, Kucinich distanced himself from the other Democratic presidential hopefuls, saying, "Let’s face it. I’m the only one who voted against the war (in Iraq), who voted 100 per cent of the time against funding it, and voted against the Patriot Act. I think that’s what a real Democrat should be doing."
In American elections, candidates require 270 votes in the Electoral College to win the White House. In November 2004, Republican George W. Bush earned a second term after securing 286 electoral votes from 31 states. Democratic nominee John Kerry received 252 electoral votes from 19 states and the District of Columbia.
Bush is ineligible for a third term in office. The presidential election is scheduled for Nov. 4.
