Democrats 2008: Hillary 33%, Obama 25%

February 28, 2007

(Angus Reid Global Monitor) - A third of Democratic Party supporters would choose Hillary Rodham Clinton as their nominee in the 2008 United States presidential election, according to a poll by Zogby International. 33 per cent of respondents would vote for the New York senator in a 2008 primary.

Illinois senator Barack Obama is second with 25 per cent, followed by former North Carolina senator John Edwards with 12 per cent. Support is lower for New Mexico governor Bill Richardson, Delaware senator Joe Biden, and retired general Wesley Clark.

On Feb. 24, former Iowa governor Tom Vilsack withdrew from the presidential race, declaring, "The reality is that the process today, as much as I would like to have been about my ideas, the right approach on the war in Iraq, in my view, the most comprehensive and most innovative approach to the domestic challenge that this country faces in terms of energy policy, is not enough. I ran up against something where good ideas, great effort, lots of hard work was just simply not enough. It is ultimately about money."

In American elections, candidates require 270 votes in the Electoral College to win the White House. In November 2004, Republican George W. Bush earned a second term after securing 286 electoral votes from 31 states. Democratic nominee John Kerry received 252 electoral votes from 19 states and the District of Columbia.

Bush is ineligible for a third term in office. The next presidential election is scheduled for November 2008.
