Democrats 2008: 45% Prefer Rodham Clinton
(Angus Reid Global Monitor) - Many Democratic Party supporters in the United States believe a former first lady would be a suitable presidential nominee, according to a poll by Harris Interactive. 45 per cent of respondents say they would consider voting for New York senator Hillary Rodham Clinton in the 2008 election.
Illinois senator Barack Obama is second on the list with 37 per cent, followed by former North Carolina senator John Edwards with 28 per cent, and former U.S. vice-president Al Gore with 26 per cent, Massachusetts senator John Kerry with 12 per cent, and Connecticut senator Joe Lieberman with also with 12 per cent.
The remaining politicians—including declared presidential contenders such as New Mexico governor Bill Richardson, Delaware senator Joe Biden and Ohio congressman Dennis Kucinich—are in single digits.
On Feb. 13, Kucinich reiterated his opposition to the coalition effort in Iraq, saying, "Now we must tell the truth, not just about escalation, but about the occupation: We are illegally occupying Iraq. We attacked a nation which did not attack us. We must recognize the wrong that has been done and move to right it."
In American elections, candidates require 270 votes in the Electoral College to win the White House. In November 2004, Republican George W. Bush earned a second term after securing 286 electoral votes from 31 states. Kerry received 252 electoral votes from 19 states and the District of Columbia.
Bush is ineligible for a third term in office. The next presidential election is scheduled for November 2008.
