Danes Would Choose Euro

September 12, 2003

(CPOD) Sept. 12, 2003 - Many citizens of Denmark are contemplating a switch to the European currency, according to a poll by Greens Institute published in daily Boersen. 53.8 per cent of respondents would adopt the Euro.

Sweden will hold a referendum on Sept. 14, to decide whether or not to adopt the Euro, which has been used in 12 of the 15 European Union (EU) countries since Jan. 1, 2002. Sweden, Denmark and Great Britain are the only current EU members that have not adopted the currency.

Prime minister Anders Fogh Rasmussen of the Liberal party favors the adoption of the European currency, but there are no plans for a new vote on the issue. Citizens rejected the Euro in a September 2000 plebiscite.
